The Joshua K. Callaway Papers,1862-1863, contain 84 letters written by Calloway to his wife, Dulcinea BakerCallaway, during his time in the Confederate Army. The letters include accounts ofhis experiences in Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Georgia, as wellas his descriptions of daily life in Confederate camps.

Joshua K. Callaway (1834-1863) was born to Reverend Joseph and Temperence Callaway on September 2, 1834 in Alabama. After Callaway’s parents died in 1857, he married Dulcinea Baker. They had three children together, two girls and one boy. After the birth of his son Joseph in early 1862, Joshua joined the 28th Alabama Regiment, Army of Tennessee, Confederate Army as a lieutenant. Callaway participated in Braxton Bragg’s invasion of Kentucky and fought in the battles of Chickamauga, Chattanooga, L...
